Beyond the Story Book: A Journey into Children's Literature explores classic and contemporary works written for young readers, examining picture books, movies, and young adult fiction through critical and cultural lenses. Students will analyze how children's literature shapes childhood experiences, addresses complex themes, and reflects societal values, while developing skills in close reading and literary criticism.
Students will learn to examine how stories, illustrations, and characters work together to explore important ideas and shape how young readers see themselves and the world. Students will develop skills in discussing and writing about children's literature. They will identify themes like identity, family, and social issues. They will also gain awareness of how diverse representation in children's books impacts young readers.
